Eligibility Criteria for the Elite Sport Scholar Award

To qualify for the Elite Sport Scholar Award, candidates must consider the following:

  • Language Requirement: English
  • Eligible Countries: All countries

Athlete Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in or about to start a course at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
  • Must compete in a recognized British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) sport and contribute to the University’s BUCS objectives.
  • Must compete at an international level or be progressing towards the highest level in their sport (e.g., national/international/professional).
  • Must be recommended by their National Governing Body (NGB) coach and/or the University’s coach in their sport.
  • Must compete for Cardiff Met in BUCS competitions as part of the scholarship requirement.
  • Must represent Cardiff Met at open events and participate in promotion and marketing activities for the School of Sports and Health Science. Failure to comply may result in loss of the scholarship.
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at Cardiff Metropolitan University and possess a Student ID Card for processing catering or general campus allowances.
  • Continuation of the award into years 2 and 3 is contingent on successful academic progression and advancement in their sport, as assessed by the Performance Sport Panel.

Athlete Requirements:

  • The award is typically not available for a fourth year but may be considered for those in 4-year programs (including Foundation), part-time, or postgraduate programs.
  • The award will not be granted to anyone retaking a full year unless there are mitigating circumstances for all re-sit credits. Details on mitigating circumstances can be found in the Academic Handbook.
  • Candidates must re-apply annually using a form provided by the Head of Performance Sport.
  • This award is not available to students at franchise colleges. Please contact the respective college for bursary and scholarship options.
  • Recipients cannot simultaneously hold the Elite Sport Scholar Award and the Postgraduate Scholarship.
  • The award package will be customized to help students reach their potential in their chosen sport.
  • The scholarship is awarded by a panel including the Head of Performance Sport, Students’ Union Sports Manager, and an academic staff member.
