- You have to be an international student studying in Canada with a Canadian study permit.
- You must enter UBC from an accredited high school or transfer from your first year to another university or post-secondary institution.
- You must have graduated from high school no earlier than a gap year before the academic year for which you are applying. For example, applicants for the winter 2024 session must have graduated from high school no earlier than November 2022.
- You must apply for your first high school diploma. You must demonstrate superior academic achievement (achieving all A’s or an equivalent standard).
- You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a UBC degree. (UBC automatically considers all international students for International Merit-Based Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards. If these scholarships do not cover your tuition and basic living needs, you are eligible to apply for the program of international scholarships.)
- You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English language admission standard
Award Benefits
The award provides financial assistance based on the demonstrated financial need of the student, covering the full cost of tuition and living expenses for the duration of the undergraduate program, and is renewable for up to three additional years of undergraduate study. This renewable nature is contingent upon the recipient maintaining satisfactory academic standing and continuing to demonstrate financial need.

It recognizes students who have made a positive impact through their involvement in various school and community service projects and initiatives and who have achieved notable results in other curricular or extracurricular activities.
Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award:
This award recognizes international students from impoverished or war-torn regions who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and who would not be able to attend university without significant financial aid.
International Impact Award:
This award is given to students who have demonstrated leadership, commitment and solutions to sustainability and climate change, conservation and management of natural resources, social justice, equity and inclusion, or health and well-being of the community. Preference is given to first-generation students and those from diverse backgrounds.
Vantage One Excellence Award:
This award is offered by UBC Vantage College to academically outstanding international students who have not yet met the English language entry standard for direct entry to UBC. The value of the scholarships can reach the total cost of the study program and the living expenses of the student. Students must demonstrate leadership skills, significant involvement in student affairs and community service, and notable achievement in other academic or extracurricular activities.

- Students interested in applying for the University of British Columbia (UBC) Award must be nominated by their current school or a recognized non-profit organization.
