the DAAD Scholarship program offers you the opportunity to continue your university studies in Germany as part of a postgraduate course. The scholarships are funded by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

DAAD Scholarship coverage

The program offers financial assistance for either a completed postgraduate or master’s program at a public or recognized university in Germany, or for a one-year study in Germany as part of the second cycle or master’s degree pursued at your home university.

One of the requirements is that the university credits obtained in Germany must be acknowledged by your home university. It is also important that the study year in Germany does not exceed the standard duration of study at your home university.

NOTE; Funding for a master’s program already started in Germany cannot be awarded.

-In certain circumstances, you can request the following additional benefits after the start of financing:

  • Monthly rent allowance (please read the important information about the scholarship / section F, point 9)
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying family members. Please also read our important information for scholarship applicants / section F, point 3
  • In case of disability or chronic illness: on request, a grant can be granted for justified additional expenses incurred in Germany due to the disability, which are necessary for the implementation of the project in Germany and which are not covered by a third party; whether and to what extent a scholarship will be paid will be considered and determined on a case-by-case basis (see important information for scholarship applicants, section F, point 8)
  • Green Mobility Top Up (support for climate-friendly travel) or reimbursement of carbon offset payments for air travel

-To enable you to improve your language skills for your stay in Germany, DAAD offers you the following advantages:

  • Payment of course fees for an online language course after receiving the scholarship award letter
  • if necessary: ​​German course (2, 4 or 6 months) before starting the residency study in Germany; The DAAD decides whether the participation is funded and for how long depending on the German language skills and the project.
  • Participation in the language course is mandatory if the study program is given in German.
  • Supplement for a personally chosen German course during the scholarship period
  • Reimbursement of the costs of a TestDaF or DSH test, which you can take either in your country after receiving your award letter, or in Germany during your funding period.

Also note that the DAAD does not cover tuition fees (important information for scholarship applicants/section F, point 7).

Duration of the funding

The scholarship program is designed to accommodate stays ranging from 10 to 24 months, aligning with the standard study period of the selected program, with a maximum duration of 24 months. Applicants are required to specify the complete period for which they are seeking the scholarship in their application. For instance, if you plan to pursue a 2-year study program, you need to indicate the two-year scholarship duration in your application.

Upon completion of the first year of study, your academic performance will be evaluated to ensure successful program completion within a reasonable timeframe. If deemed satisfactory, the scholarship will continue as scheduled.

Typically, the scholarship commences on October 1 of the following year, or earlier if you opt to undertake a German course preceding the study program.

You can apply if you have completed your first degree (for example bachelor or diploma) at the time the funding period begins.

An independent selection committee made up of specialist scientists examines the applications.

The selection criteria are as follows:
